Tropical Girdled Lizard
Cordylus tropidosternum
The East African armadillo lizard prefers a horizontal 80x40x40 cm rock-themed terrarium. Provide a dry sand/clay substrate, narrow crevices mimicking natural habitats, strong UVB lighting, and dusted insect prey.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found across the dry savannas, woodlands, and rocky outcrops of East Africa, including Tanzania, Kenya, and Mozambique. It shelters in rock crevices and hollow tree trunks.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Cordylidae and the genus Cordylus. Characterized by genetic pathways responsible for heavy osteoderm development, creating a spiked dermal armor for self-defense.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and moderately social, often living in small family groups. When threatened, they wedge themselves into rock crevices by inflating their lungs, presenting only their sharp, spiky scales to predators.
Morphology: A relatively small lizard reaching 15-18 cm in total length. The body is heavily armored with large, keeled, spiny scales arranged in regular girdles around the body and tail. Coloration is brown, yellowish, or grey.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: Provide a horizontal terrarium (minimum 80x40x40 cm). Arrange flat rocks securely to create natural crevice hides. Use a dry substrate of soil-sand mix and add pieces of cork bark.
Lighting and Heating: Requires high basking temperatures. Basking spot should reach 38-42°C (100-108°F), with ambient temperatures of 26-30°C (79-86°F) and a night drop to 18-20°C (64-68°F). Strong 10-12% UVB light is mandatory.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain low humidity (40-50%). Provide a shallow water dish. Lightly spray a corner of the tank once a week to simulate natural dew.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Feed crickets, small roaches, and mealworms. Dust prey with pure calcium at most feedings, and calcium with D3 and multivitamins twice a week.
Compatibility: Can be housed in small groups consisting of one male and multiple females. Never house multiple males together, as they will fight for dominance.
Health and Common Diseases: Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) is a high risk if UVB lighting is outdated or calcium is omitted. High humidity can trap moisture under the scales, causing bacterial or fungal dermatitis.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Insectivore
- The Tropical Girdled Lizard primarily relies on an insectivorous diet, consisting mostly of small beetles, ants, termites, and spiders. They are skilled opportunistic hunters that forage in the rocky outcrops and scrublands of East Africa. Their robust jaws allow them to crush the hard exoskeletons of their prey efficiently. These lizards tend to remain close to the safety of rock crevices, making quick dashes out to seize passing insects before rapidly retreating to shelter. While arthropods constitute the vast majority of their nutritional intake, they have been occasionally observed consuming tiny vertebrates if the opportunity arises. Water is typically obtained directly from their food or by licking dew from rocks during the early morning.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 20 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They exhibit a semi-arboreal and saxicolous (rock-dwelling) lifestyle. They require a heavily decorated enclosure featuring stacked bark, hollow logs, and rock crevices where they can wedge their spiky bodies to feel secure from predators.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Diurnal
- The Tropical Girdled Lizard is heavily armored and diurnal. They are ambush predators that spend hours basking motionless on logs or rocks, waiting for insect prey to wander nearby before striking with surprising speed.
- Sozialität
- Gregarious
- This species exhibits a communal lifestyle, frequently found living in small to medium-sized groups among rocky crevices and hollow logs. Aggregating together allows them to share the best hiding spots and optimize the thermal benefits of shared basking sites. Despite their communal nature, there is a subtle social hierarchy within the group, often dominated by the largest male. Group living also provides enhanced vigilance against predators, as the collective awareness of the colony makes it harder for predators to approach unnoticed. When threatened, they utilize a unique defense mechanism, wedging themselves tightly into cracks and using their spiny scales to lock themselves in place. This shared defensive strategy and microhabitat reliance solidify their strong communal bonds.
- Reproduktion
- Viviparous
- Unlike many other reptiles, the Tropical Girdled Lizard is viviparous, meaning females give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. This adaptation is highly beneficial in harsh rocky environments where suitable, safe nesting sites for eggs are scarce. Females typically produce a small litter consisting of one to four fully developed offspring after a prolonged gestation period. The live-bearing strategy ensures that the young are not exposed to the vulnerabilities associated with stationary incubation. Upon birth, the miniature lizards are completely independent and capable of navigating the rocky terrain immediately. Their heavily armored scales begin hardening right away, offering essential protection from predators and the abrasive environment.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- With caution
- They are shy and somewhat defensive. If threatened, they will wedge themselves tightly into crevices or thrash their spiky tails. They are best treated as a display species, as handling causes stress and ruins their sense of security.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- Native to the warmer regions of eastern Africa, they do not undergo a true brumation. A slight drop in temperature during the winter months is acceptable but not required for their general health and well-being.
- Häutung
- Regular
- They shed in coarse patches. Proper hydration and moderate ambient humidity (around 50-60%) are necessary. Because their heavily keeled scales can trap dead skin, providing rough surfaces like cork bark is essential to help them rub it off.
