Echinodorus 'Altlandsberg'

Geographical Origin and Habitat: This specific botanical marvel does not exist in nature. Echinodorus "Altlandsberg" is a breathtaking, highly exclusive commercial hybrid created by Tomas Kaliebe in the famous Zoologica nursery near Altlandsberg, Germany (from which it derives its name). It was meticulously crossbred from wild South American Amazon Sword stock. In the aquarium, it behaves precisely like its wild river-dwelling ancestors: acting as a deeply rooted, highly resilient, massive amphibious rosette plant perfectly adapted to submerged conditions.

Taxonomy & Genetics: Scientifically classified within the Alismataceae family, it is a highly prized, elite cultivar in the global aquascaping hobby. Taxonomically, it is an extremely complex hybrid derived from crossing Echinodorus grandiflorus with deep-red Echinodorus cultivars. Genetically, "Altlandsberg" inherited the massive, violently ruffled leaf structure of E. grandiflorus. More importantly, its genetics are completely dominated by an explosive mutation that forces massive, hyper-concentrated anthocyanin pigment production across all tissues.

Physical Structure: The architectural structure of the "Altlandsberg" sword is overwhelmingly dominant, incredibly heavy, and massively sprawling. It is a gigantic rosette plant completely lacking vertical stems. The foundation is a massive, thick, tuberous subterranean rhizome that deploys an aggressive, incredibly deep-reaching white root system. The leaves erupt from the crown on distinct, thick, surprisingly short petioles. The foliage is the defining structural feature: perfectly rounded (orbicular) to broadly ovate, massive, and intensely ruffled/dimpled.

Color & Texture: The coloration is absolutely explosive, darkly sophisticated, and visually arresting. Grown submerged under intense lighting, the massive, rounded leaves shift dramatically through a violently vibrant spectrum: newly emerged leaves erupt as a blindingly bright magenta to dark plum-purple, slowly fading into a deeply saturated, glowing reddish-bronze or dark chocolate-red as they mature. The texture is intensely rigid, extremely leathery, and deeply "bullate" (hammered/dimpled) across the entire massive leaf surface.

Lighting & CO2: It is a massive, heavily pigmented titan that demands high energy. While it will technically survive in low-light, shaded aquariums, its spectacular genetics will completely fail; the massive leaves will lose their purple-red color, fade to a muddy olive-green, and stretch aggressively upward. To unlock its compact, tightly sprawling rosette shape, heavily hammered texture, and blindingly bright magenta/purple colors, blasting, high-intensity LED lighting is absolutely mandatory. Pressurized CO2 drastically accelerates its massive growth.

Nutrition & Substrate: As an elite, colossal Amazon Sword hybrid, "Altlandsberg" is a terrifyingly aggressive, obligate root feeder. Its massive root system strictly demands a very deep (minimum 7 cm / 3 inches), highly mature, nutrient-dense substrate. It absolutely demands premium aquasoil heavily enriched with iron and macro-nutrient root tabs directly beneath the massive tuber to fuel its intense red/purple pigmentation. If starved of root nutrients, the giant round leaves will quickly turn pale, lose their red coloration, and dissolve.

Water Chemistry: Originating from highly stabilized German nursery conditions, it is practically invincible regarding standard water parameters. It thrives effortlessly in heated tropical aquariums (22-28°C) and is exceptionally adaptable, comfortably tolerating both soft, acidic blackwater and moderately hard, highly alkaline tap water (pH 6.0 - 8.0). The single most critical environmental requirement is absolute chemical stability. It drastically prefers stable parameters over perfectly optimized ones. It demands strong water flow to clean its dimpled leaves.

Space Management & Placement: Due to its absolute monstrous size (capable of reaching 40-50 cm in diameter), uniquely rounded, heavily dimpled leaves, and blinding purple-red color, "Altlandsberg" is strictly a solitary, dominant centerpiece for large aquariums (minimum 200 liters). It MUST be planted singularly, completely isolated in the midground or background. Because it grows as a massive, sprawling rosette, it will rapidly form a breathtaking, impenetrable purple-red umbrella that aggressively shadows and chokes out any smaller plants placed too close.

Pruning: Pruning is a simple, massive, and highly necessary procedure. Never attempt to trim the thick, dimpled leaves in half; the cut edge will instantly turn black, rot, and destroy the aesthetic. To prune dead, yellowing, or excessively massive older leaves that are shadowing the tank, you must reach down to the absolute base of the massive rosette and cleanly slice the thick petiole directly at the crown. It rarely spreads via runners; instead, it slowly forms a massive, impenetrable core that is extremely difficult to uproot.

Risks & Diseases: The absolute greatest threat to the "Altlandsberg" sword is Green Spot Algae (GSA) and nutrient starvation. Because the massive, heavily dimpled, purple-red leaves are long-lasting and broad, they act as massive landing pads for devastating Green Spot Algae if phosphate levels drop or light is too intense without adequate CO2. Once GSA aggressively spots the massive leaves, it cannot be cleaned off and ruins the deep purple coloration. If root nutrients are exhausted, the plant will violently cannibalize itself.
