Iridescent Shark (Pangasius Catfish / Basa)
Pangasianodon hypophthalmus
The Pet-Store Tragedy and the False Shark (100-130 cm / 3-4 feet, up to 100 lbs). This species represents the absolute pinnacle of irresponsible aquarium industry marketing. Sold to millions of unknowing beginners as an adorable, 2-inch 'shark' with shimmering rainbow scales, it is actually a massive, migratory Asian river catfish and a highly skittish, panic-prone schooling giant. It explodes in growth, reaching over 3 feet and weighing up to 100 pounds. It loses all rainbow color, becoming a massive, grey, blob of fat. They are categorically unsuitable for ANY home aquarium and strictly require 5,000+ gallon heated indoor ponds to prevent horrific spinal deformities or death by repeatedly smashing their skulls into the glass in sheer panic.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Semi-aggressive
- They are extremely skittish and easily frightened by sudden movements. When spooked, they will blindly ram into the aquarium glass. Their nervous temperament makes them poorly suited for standard home setups.
- Diät
- Omnivore
- They are highly omnivorous and will consume almost anything. Quality large pellets and meaty foods form the base of their diet. As they mature, adding vegetable matter is beneficial.
- Lebenserwartung
- 15-20 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 130 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Solitary
- They are schooling fish that feel safest in large groups. Keeping them singly causes extreme stress and erratic behavior. However, a school of adults requires an aquarium of thousands of gallons.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- Young fish should be fed heavily multiple times a day. Adults require substantial meals several times a week. Their voracious appetite leads to incredibly rapid growth.
- Bioload
- Extreme
- They produce a staggeringly massive bioload. Their rapid growth and immense adult size mean they output huge waste volumes. Commercial-grade filtration is often required for adult specimens.
- Fluss
- Stagnant
- They prefer moderate to high flow that mimics large river systems. Strong water movement helps keep them exercised. Excellent oxygenation is mandatory for their active lifestyle.
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- They pose a very severe jump risk due to their skittish nature. They frequently dart upward and smash into tank lids when startled. Heavy, securely fastened covers are absolutely necessary.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Captive breeding is completely impossible in standard home aquariums. They are bred exclusively in massive commercial ponds using hormone injections. They require extensive river migrations to naturally spawn.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- With caution
- They will enthusiastically eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouths. They are generally peaceful with similarly sized, robust giants. They panic easily and can severely injure delicate tank mates during frantic dashes.
- Tankfüllstand
- Middle
- They are highly active mid-water swimmers. They constantly cruise back and forth in the middle zones of the tank. They need massive amounts of unobstructed open swimming space.
