Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea to northern Australia, the Philippines, and Polynesia. Inhabits shallow rocky reefs and wave-swept shores.
Taxonomy: Also known by the synonym Rochia nilotica, belonging to the family Tegulidae. Features a heavy, top-shaped conical shell that can exceed 8-12 cm in base diameter as a mature adult. Grows to 10 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, hardworking, and primarily nocturnal. Constantly climbs rocks and aquarium glass scraping algae with its radula. Unlike many snails, it can easily right itself if flipped over.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Shell has a white or cream base color, marked with thick reddish-purple or reddish-brown vertical zig-zag stripes. The interior is lined with a thick layer of shiny nacre. No visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Suitable for medium to large marine aquariums of 30 gallons or more. Requires stable, secured live rock with ample surface area for grazing. Secure loose rocks to prevent displacement.
Diet and Feeding: Obligate herbivore. Consumes large amounts of green hair algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and film algae. Supplement with dried seaweed (nori sheets) if natural algae is depleted.
Water Quality: Stable reef parameters. Salinity SG 1.021-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and sudden osmotic shocks.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Ideal cleaner snail for reef community tanks. Compatible with peaceful fish and corals. May occasionally be attacked by large predatory hermit crabs.
Aquarium Breeding: Can reproduce spontaneously in home aquariums through broadcast spawning. Fertilized eggs develop into larvae that settle quickly on rocky substrates.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation in extremely clean tanks. Low calcium or alkalinity levels preventing proper shell growth. Highly sensitive to copper treatments.

- Calcium and minerals
- Alti.
