Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Restricted to the Western Central Pacific, mainly recorded around the Mariana Islands. Inhabits protected lagoons and reef slopes with sand and rubble patches down to 30 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae. Possesses pharyngeal teeth modified for crushing small prey. Reaches a maximum standard length of 10 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, shy, and diurnal. Spends daylight hours foraging near the substrate. Instantly buries itself in sand when alarmed.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body has a complex pattern of reddish-orange spots and green highlights. Features distinct dark blotches along the flanks. Spawning males exhibit brighter, iridescent colors.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 150 liters with fine sand (6-8 cm deep) to allow burying behavior. Coarse sand can cause skin abrasions. A secure lid is mandatory.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on micro-crustaceans. Needs an established tank with a high population of copepods. Offer small frozen foods 3-4 times daily.

Water Quality: Maintain stable values: temperature 23-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Efficient biological filtration and protein skimming are necessary.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. Peaceful towards most tankmates. Do not house with aggressive or fast-feeding species that can cause stress.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Spawns pelagic eggs in nature. Captive breeding is undocumented due to pelagic larval requirements.

Risks and Diseases: Starvation in immature systems is the main cause of mortality. Susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) during initial introduction.
