Corn Snake (Amelanistic)
Pantherophis guttatus
The classic red corn snake. As the first bred mutation, it totally lacks black pigmentation, becoming entirely bright orange and fiery red with red eyes.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: A terrestrial predator and excellent climber widely distributed in open forests, cultivated fields, and grasslands of the southeastern United States. The common name famously derives from their historical habit of hunting rodents inside grain storage buildings, or from the checkered pattern on their belly.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Colubridae. The corn snake (*Pantherophis guttatus*) is a highly popular species in captivity. The "Amelanistic" variant represents a stable recessive mutation that eliminates melanin (black pigment), resulting in bright orange and red coloration with red eyes.
Behavior and Habits: A peaceful and docile species, making them the classic beginner snake. They rarely bite defensively, preferring to retreat or vibrate their tail tip against dry leaves to mimic a rattlesnake. They are crepuscular and nocturnal active explorers. They are expert escape artists.
Morphology: A slender, muscular colubrid capable of reaching 120-150 cm in length. Adult females tend to be slightly longer and heavier than males of the same age, but there are no obvious coloration differences between the sexes.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: A mature adult requires an enclosure of at least 100x45x45 cm or 120x45x45 cm. Enclosures must be highly secure with sliding locks or tight clips to prevent escape. Use dry, burrowable substrates like aspen shavings, dry coco husk, or Lignocel. Provide at least two tight-fitting hides (one in the warm zone, one in the cool zone) and sturdy climbing branches.
Lighting and Heating: Provide a horizontal thermal gradient. The cool zone should be 22-24°C, while the warm zone should have an under-tank heat mat or ceramic heat emitter thermostatically controlled at 30-32°C. A thermostat is mandatory to prevent thermal burns. Turn off heating/light sources at night to allow a natural drop to 20-22°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain ambient humidity at 40-50%. Provide a shallow bowl of clean water for drinking. During the shedding process, a humid hide containing damp sphagnum moss or wet paper towels must be provided to ensure a complete shed and prevent stuck shed.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly carnivorous. Feed exclusively on thawed frozen mice. Never feed live prey, which can attack and injure the snake. Hatchlings eat one pinky mouse every 5-7 days; adults eat one large mouse every 10-14 days. Avoid handling the snake for 48-72 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.
Compatibility: Solitary animals. Keep individually to prevent stress, food competition, and potential aggression. They should not be housed with other species.
Health and Common Diseases: Prone to respiratory infections if humidity is too high and ventilation is poor. Stuck sheds can constrict the tail tip or digits, leading to necrosis if not removed. Regurgitation can occur from handling too soon after a meal, which is highly damaging to their stomach flora.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Carnivore
- Corn snakes are active hunters and constrictors that primarily feed on rodents, such as mice and rats, in the wild. They occasionally consume birds, eggs, and smaller reptiles when mammalian prey is scarce. In captivity, they are enthusiastic eaters that thrive on a staple diet of appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice. They have a relatively fast metabolism and are typically fed every one to two weeks depending on their age and size.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 150 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are predominantly terrestrial and spend much of their time on the ground or burrowing lightly, but they are also capable climbers and will utilize low branches if provided.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Crepuscular
- Corn snakes are primarily crepuscular and diurnal, meaning they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon, exploring their environment for rodents.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- Renowned for their incredibly docile and curious temperament, corn snakes are highly active and frequently explore their enclosures. They are semi-arboreal, meaning they are excellent climbers and will readily utilize vertical space, though they also burrow in loose substrate. As primarily crepuscular or diurnal hunters, they are often visible during the day, making them engaging and easily observable pets.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Corn snakes are prolific breeders and are oviparous, laying clutches of 10 to 30 elongated eggs in warm, moist environments like rotting logs. The female does not provide maternal care, leaving the eggs to incubate naturally for about 60 to 65 days. Upon hatching, the neonates are entirely independent and will typically have their first shed within a week before beginning to hunt.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Tolerant
- They are widely considered one of the most docile and easy-to-handle snake species. They are rarely aggressive, making them a perfect choice for beginners and children under supervision.
- Brumation
- Brumation is not strictly necessary for pet corn snakes unless breeding is desired. For breeding, a cooling period of 60-90 days at 50-60°F (10-15°C) is highly recommended.
- Häutung
- Regular
- They generally shed easily without intervention. A moderate ambient humidity with the addition of a humid hide filled with damp sphagnum moss during the shedding cycle is ideal.
