Alligator snapping turtle

Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to the southeastern United States, primarily within the Mississippi River basin and Gulf Coast river systems. They inhabit deep rivers, canals, bayous, and swamps with soft mud bottoms and abundant submerged timber, where they spend most of their time camouflaged.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Chelydridae. It is the largest member of the genus Macrochelys. Taxonomic studies have recently identified distinct species within their geographic range, but Macrochelys temminckii remains the most widely recognized. No color morphs are established in trade.

Behavior and Habits: Almost entirely aquatic, sedentary, and nocturnal. They are classic ambush predators, lying motionless on the riverbed with their mouth wide open. They wiggle a pink, worm-like appendage on the floor of their mouth to lure fish within reach of their lightning-fast jaws.

Morphology: Features a massive head with a sharp, hooked beak and a thick, dark carapace marked by three distinct longitudinal ridges of raised plates resembling alligator skin. Their eyes are ringed by fleshy eyelashes. Adults can easily grow to over 80 cm in length and weigh up to 50-70 kg.

Terrarium Setup: Requires extremely large setups. Adult specimens need indoor ponds or heavy-duty custom aquariums of at least 500-1000 liters. The water depth should allow the turtle to reach the surface to breathe while resting on the bottom. Secure driftwood and large rocks to prevent movement.

Lighting and Heating: While they rarely bask out of the water, a dry area with a basking spot at 28-30 degrees Celsius (82-86°F) and UVB lighting must be available. Water temperature must be maintained between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius. Use guarded industrial-grade heaters to prevent damage from the turtle.

Humidity and Hydration: Aquatic species that remains hydrated through the water column. Ambient humidity around the enclosure should be kept at 60-70%. Given their high waste output, a massive filtration system (such as commercial-grade canister filters) is mandatory to prevent skin infections.

Feeding and Supplementation: Carnivorous. Feed whole freshwater fish, crayfish, crabs, mice, frogs, and high-quality commercial turtle pellets. Avoid feeding processed meats or saltwater fish exclusively. Dust foods regularly with calcium carbonate and reptile multivitamins to support their massive bone structure.

Compatibility: Must be housed strictly alone. Their powerful jaws can easily decapitate, sever limbs, or kill other turtles or fish in the same tank. Even juveniles will bite each other during feeding. Keep out of reach of children and inexperienced handlers.

Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to skin fungus and shell rot due to poor water quality. Overfeeding can lead to rapid growth and hepatic lipidosis. The main hazard is handling; these turtles can strike quickly and cause severe physical injury, requiring extreme caution during tank cleaning.
