Group identity and resolution: Marine benthic foraminifera are presented as a taxonomic group, not as one species with a fixed diet or aquarium role. They are single-celled rhizarian protists commonly associated with sediment, rock, algae and reef surfaces. A chambered test can guide a first orientation, yet empty tests, shell fragments and other particles are not proof of a living foraminifer. Use a species name only when diagnostic characters, live-cell evidence; a trade label or photograph does not settle identity.
Tests, size and visibility: Many benthic forms have chambered tests, but test composition, chamber arrangement, wall texture and shape vary widely. A 100–1000 μm working range helps set scale for many small forms, while the group includes smaller and larger taxa. Size depends on species, chamber stage and method. Some tests are visible as grains or specks, but naked-eye observation cannot distinguish a live organism from empty material. Meaning in the aquarium: A small living population can be part of ordinary marine microbenthic diversity, particularly when live rock or sand was introduced. Empty tests can persist after death, so their presence alone does not demonstrate growth. Interpret a local increase with food supply, light, flow, predation and sediment disturbance before calling it an outbreak. No chemical or physical control follows from a presumed name; first establish whether the material is alive and whether a system problem is present.
Culture and specialist limits: Do not treat incidental aquarium specimens as a home-culture starter. Published maintenance studies are species-specific and can require known stock, marine chemistry, suitable substrate, light for photosymbiotic taxa and controlled food. Keep any research line separate and traceable, and do not transfer unknown sediment or organisms into display aquariums. Culture survival does not prove taxonomic purity, symbiosis, health or suitability for another aquarium.
Ecological relationships: Some benthic foraminifera consume microalgae, bacteria or detrital material, while particular larger reef taxa host photosynthetic symbionts and contribute carbonate. These are evidence-based, directional relationships, not a stocking guide. Diet, calcification and symbiosis cannot be assigned to every observed test. Keep the organism, habitat and confidence level together when reading a relationship; a group label does not turn an incidental grain into a measured ecosystem service.
Biosecurity and escalation: Use dedicated tools for unfamiliar live sand, rock and culture material, and avoid moving water, sediment or specimens between systems. Do not collect from protected or unknown habitats. Seek specialist help when a species-level determination is needed for research, regulated collection, persistent culture failure or an apparent system change that cannot be explained by ordinary water-quality review.
